…as in Blair.
First, the US sinks to new lows, and now, it seems the EU is unraveling at the seams, with the UK taking advantage of the increasing political weakness of the current French and German governments, of the rejection of the proposed constitutional treaty by the French and the Dutch, and general dissatisfaction with the Euro which was cunningly used by cynical corporations to raise consumer prices everywhere, to scuttle the current budget talks. Even the poor countries who have recently joined the union were willing to compromise and see their subsidies cut, but the U.K. said fuck you anyway.
I hate to ask this, because it is a potentially belligerent thing to say, and widespread and longstanding peace is the EU’s greatest achievement, but who the fuck let the U.K. into the EU? They have been torpedoing all attempted political advances for decades, and because of the current constitutional debacle, the U.K., which is about to preside the EU for the next six months, is now in a better position than ever to obliterate whatever European ideals are left, and to make sure it remains a mere free-exchange zone and nothing more. This is in direct opposition to the will of most of Europe. People in France and in Holland didn’t really vote against the proposed advances in the treaty, they voted against the way Europe is currently run, and the fact that the treaty seemed to carve this way of doing things in stone, and even extend it, a Europe where everything must take a back seat to market forces, even if it means destroying public utilities and services should they not be profitable, submitting culture to competition (ending subsidies to artists and setting the stage for total Hollywood domination), and watching and doing nothing as jobs are outsourced and as cheap goods pour in from China.
The US are much more protectionist than the EU!
Personnaly, I believe the constitutional treaty would have made it easier to counter a lot of these real, potential, or perceived ills, and I curse my fellow frogs for voting no and thus handing the EU on a silver platter over to Blair and his narrow, selfish vision of Europe.
What will my kids say of my generation when they grow up?
