As I surmised, I didn’t exchange my new 24″ iMac for a new one.
I actually had a crazy dream the night before the exchange deadline, in which I unpacked a new one, and the glass was cracked, and the Mac housed a rich, tropical ecosystem of tangled vegetation, fungus, insects and condensation.
At least it wasn’t a PC wrapped in men’s underwear.
Most of the time, I can ignore and forget about the unevenness of the screen (which I seem to be the only one to notice anyway).
So no regrets.
Other than that, I have to say that I am thrilled with this machine.
It is fast, even though I bought the low-end model.
Speaking of which, when I went back to the FNAC store where I bought it to ask the so-called Apple Genius about the screen problem (which he denied existed), he told me you had to be an idiot to buy that model. Nice. I told him I did audio and didn’t need the faster graphics. To which he responded, « ah, yes, audio… ».
Speaking of which, writing and recording my first song on this machine was a real pleasure (using Reason, SampleTank & Digital Performer), as I could pile on instruments and effects without pushing it to the brink.
Speaking of which, instead of buying the next model up, I bought an external 1 GB hard drive to use with Mac OS Leopard’s built-in Time Machine automatic backup software. It really feels good to consistently have a recent backup, and Time Machine has already saved my ass a few times.
The iMac is very silent (for now). My old G5 would get louder and louder until I’d open it and blow out the fantastic amount of dust that had accumulated (a plague in Paris). No way to open this iMac model, so we’ll just have to see how things evolve.
There is one small thing that bugs me, which is that it doesn’t have a « sleep light » like every other Mac I’ve owned in recent years. To you Windows people out there, we Mac folk only have to reboot when installing low-level software. Our OS doesn’t progressively crap out like Windows does (I happened to reboot today, for the first time in over a month). We put our Macs to sleep (not as terminal as it sounds) and a nice, pulsating light indicates that this is the case. Anyway, because it’s so silent and doesn’t have a sleep light, I’m not always sure it’s gone to sleep like a good iMac, and have to press my ear to it, or even sillier, wake it up, to put it manually back to sleep.
