Tenori-On

Check out this demo of the Tenori-On, a new electronic musical instrument, based on an innovative UI. It is well thought out and actually seems usable, allowing for an interesting mix of controlled music-making and random elements. A much simplified version is apparently due to arrive for the iPhone.

iPhone Apps

When the first iPhone came out a year ago, it was criticized (among other things) for the lack of third-party apps. They weren’t allowed, except for so-called Web-apps, which were « just » Web pages. So hackers unlocked the iPhone, developers developed unsanctioned third-party apps, and eventually, Apple released a software development kit for writing native iPhone…

1 mot, 1 chanson: Design Notes

I wanted a grungy looking site for 1 mot, 1 chanson. With textures, and torn paper edges, and dirty scotch-tape, and ink blotches, and fingerprints, and coffee rings, and, well, you get the idea. So I went scouring the WordPress web looking for inspiration, and ended up using Modicus by Upstart Blogger. I couldn’t be…

ABC3D

This video presentation of an amazing 3D pop-up alphabet book by French designer Marion Bataille has been popping up all over the design Web, and I can’t resist linking to it any longer. Beautiful, clever, inspired.

The More Things Change…

A couple of months back, I updated the design of sknoblog to what you see now. Then a few weeks back, my site was suspended by my ISP when a major spam attack caused my comments database table to grow too big, too fast. The table was simply destroyed by the ISP. Part of the…

While there are many dedicated sites out there that do a commendable job of describing new features, I often discover things that I like or hate that were never mentioned anywhere. Which is why I thought I’d mention my recent upgrades to Mac…

Ingenuity. No, Really!

I don’t play computer games. I don’t own a console. I don’t even play cards. So I don’t know what possessed me to watch this video, and then to keep watching it. But if you’re even a teeny tiny bit geeky (if you own a TV or, say, a watch), hang in there during the…

Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac: Giant Disappointment

I’ve been testing Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac for a couple of days in real world situations (for me). As you should know by now, I’m no great fan of Microsoft products, but they are unavoidable in my line of work. I receive dozens of Office documents from my clients every week. The new version…

iPhone in the Wild

I just spent a week of R&R in the small family house in the tiny village in Normandy. I’ve installed an ADSL modem/wireless router there, and I brought my MacBook and my iPhone along for the ride. Things would have been different had I had to work, but as it was, I used my MacBook…
